Bhubaneswar, January 4: A day after an autorickshaw driver killed in an accident caused by a State-run 'Ama Bus' at Rupali Square here, the Commissionerate Police on Sunday checked a number of Ama buses and conducted breath analyser tests of drivers.

The breath analyser tests are not only being conducted at starting points but also randomly on the way.

Several teams of the Commisionerate Police are conducting the checking in various parts of the city under the direct supervision Commissioner of Police S Dev Dutta Singh to ensure that drivers are not under the influence of alcohol while on the wheels.

Earlier today, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed serious concern over frequent accidents caused by State-run 'Ama Bus' and directed the authorities to provide training to drivers for skill development and instil a sensitive attitude among them.

The Chief Minister has also directed the Transport Department to form a special squad to check the fitness of the buses at regular intervals and regularly review the situation and make efforts to ensure that such unfortunate incidents do not occur again.

Notably, an Ama Bus operated by the Capital Urban Region Transport (CRUT) moving at a high speed rammed into an auto-rickshaw standing at Rupali Square, waiting for the signal to turn green. Under the impact, the auto-rickshaw was pushed forward and hit a school bus standing ahead.

The auto-rickshaw driver, Bishnu Patro (62), of Binjharpur in Jajpur district, died on the spot. Two female passengers travelling in the ill-fated autorickshaw also sustained injuries in the accident.

Police arrested the accused bus driver, Sachitra Kumar Sahoo (55). He has been booked under culpable homicide section (105) of Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita.
