Balasore, Feb 4: In a major enforcement drive, the Jaleswar Excise Department seized and destroyed 300 litres of country liquor, 6,500 litres of fermented mahua, and equipment used in the preparation of illicit liquor during a raid at Rangamatia village under Baradiha panchayat.

The operation, however, led to tension in Bankati village under the same panchayat when officials attempted to apprehend alleged liquor trader Shambhu Rana. According to sources, excise personnel seized more than five litres of country liquor from his residence and detained him. During the process, his family members and some villagers allegedly confronted the officials, resulting in a scuffle. Shambhu was reportedly freed from custody amid the commotion.

Following the incident, Shambhu Rana and his elder son’s wife, Jatri Rana, received treatment at Hatigarh Hospital. They later approached Raibania police station, alleging that excise officials had assaulted and manhandled them without justification. Police, however, reportedly did not register their complaint.

Officials said that cases were previously registered against Shambhu Rana. The Jaleswar Excise Department has informed higher authorities and the Raibania police about the incident, and further action is awaited.
