Bhubaneswar, Dec 1: Celebrating a historic milestone, eminent obstetrician and gynecologist Professor Dr. K.Laxmi Bai turned 100 today. Marking the occasion with an extraordinary act of generosity, she has donated ₹3 crore 40 lakh from her lifelong savings to AIIMS Bhubaneswar. The contribution will be used to establish a Women’s Cancer Care and Treatment Centre at the institute. All discussions and paperwork related to the donation have already been completed.

Dr. K.Laxmi Bai, a member of the first MBBS batch of Cuttack Medical College and Hospital, has been living in Bhavanagar, Berhampur after retiring from MKCG Medical College and Hospital. Her former student and noted Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, P. Bharati, along with Dr. Bharati Mishra, oversaw the formalities of the donation.

Expressing pride and admiration, both said that their mentor’s compassion and commitment to public healthcare will serve as an inspiration to many.

Born on December 5, 1926, Dr. Bai completed her MBBS at SCB Medical College between 1945 and 1950. She pursued her DGO and MD in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Madras Medical College in 1958. Beginning her medical service career in 1950 at Sundargarh District Hospital, she served with distinction until her retirement from MKCG in 1986.

For her outstanding contributions to healthcare, Dr. K.Laxmi Bai has been honored with numerous awards, including the Bharat Jyoti Award, the International Friendship Society Award, and the Best Citizen of India Award.

Her remarkable gesture on her 100th birthday stands as a shining example of lifelong dedication to medical service and humanity.
