Berhampur, June 28: Empowering youth to champion menstrual hygiene and end period stigma took center stage at a vibrant public health outreach program titled ‘Let’s Talk Periods’, hosted at Berhampur University on Saturday. The initiative focused on building a more period-friendly world through education, open dialogue, and student engagement.
Organized by IFI Foundation, Swasthya Plus, and OdishaLIVE in collaboration with Berhampur University, the program witnessed enthusiastic participation from hundreds of students and faculty across various departments.
Speaking as Chief Guest, Prof. Geetanjali Dash, Vice Chancellor of the university, emphasized, “Menstruation is a natural and biological part of a woman’s life, yet outdated stigmas and taboos persist. Education and awareness are powerful tools to break these barriers, and our youth can play a crucial role by spreading the message in their homes and communities.”
Highlighting the vision behind the ‘Let’s Talk Periods’ campaign, Pranati Parida, Co-Chair of IFI Foundation and Chair of the campaign, said, “Maintaining menstrual hygiene is vital for the physical and mental well-being of women. Every year, World Menstrual Hygiene Day reinforces this cause. To truly make an impact, we must inform, engage, and empower the youth.”
A special campaign brochure was unveiled during the event, offering essential information and access to educational videos. Students also showcased creative posters advocating sustainable menstrual practices and positive social messaging.
The audience was given a sneak preview of an informative video capsule that explored the A to Z of menstrual health, including related medical concerns. Adding depth to the discussion, Dr. Kusum Dash, Senior Consultant, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Kalinga Hospital, Bhubaneswar, and Sanjukta Sabat, Public Health Educator, addressed student queries and provided expert insights.
Other notable attendees included Prof. Sukant Kumar Tripathy, Chairman, PG Council, Dr. Bandita Kumari Panda, Head, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, and Nilambar Rath, Editor & CEO of OdishaLIVE.
The sessions were moderated by Priyanka Sucharita, with coordination support from Amit Kumar Mohanty, Sitansu Shekhar Sutar, and Sushree Smita Behera from OdishaLIVE and Swasthya Plus.
The IFI Foundation, a partner of the global menstrual hygiene movement, continues to drive impactful change through such grassroots initiatives, reminding everyone that conversations around periods are not just important, but essential.
