World Cup debutants Cabo Verde stun heavyweights Uruguay with an unforgettable draw in Miami

Debutants Cabo Verde secure historic draw against heavyweights Uruguay.

Debutants Cabo Verde delivered an exceptional performance to hold two-time champions Uruguay to a 2-2 tie on Sunday. Kevin Pina secured his country's first World Cup goal ever with a brilliant long-range free-kick in the 21st minute at Miami Stadium. Competing as one of the smallest African island nations in FIFA history, they proved they belong on the global stage against traditional football giants.

Maximiliano Araujo leveled the score right before halftime to calm South American nerves. Following the break, defensive errors proved costly for the favorites. Mathias Olivera hit a weak pass across his own penalty area in the 61st minute. Substitute Helio Varela quickly intercepted the ball, bypassed goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, and finished into an open net to tie the match.

Darwin Nunez entered the pitch late to rescue his squad. He generated a dangerous chance during stoppage time, but Federico Valverde missed the fast cross. Agustin Canobbio then fired a clear shot over the crossbar in the final seconds. Cabo Verde held firm to secure a magical point. Both teams now share two points after two matches, setting up a tense final matchday.
