Ganjam, Dec 18: A woman Sarpanch of Odisha’s Ganjam district has descended to street-begging for her bread and butter. Hema Naik, the uncontested Sarpanch of Badapalli gram Panchayat under Khallikote block is living such a miserable life, despite holding the Chair of the Sarpanch for last five years. Hema who is a thumb-printer was unanimously nominated as the Badapalli Sarpanch, since she was the only woman from the Scheduled Caste category according to the reservation norms. However, the financial status of her family, comprising two daily wager sons, two daughter in laws and a low-paid contractual worker, husband; forced her to come onto the street to beg alms. Sources said, Hema has been attending the Panchayat office only on the special occasions whereas she is being sighted begging most of the days. Her husband is receiving Rs 2,350 honorarium, meant for the Sarpanch on her behalf. At the same time, he is assisting the Panchayat Executive Officer with the work of the Sarpanch. On the other hand, being informed from the social media the Block and district administration has assured her a host of assistance to repair her dilapidated house and to meet both ends, instead of begging.
