Woman counsel appeals to implement Interstate Migrant Workmen Act

Cuttack, May 11: A woman counsel has appealed the Orissa High Court regarding implementation of the Interstate Migrant Workmen Act in the country. The petitioner, Mrinalini Padhi of Cuttack urged to universalize the migrant workers act to facilitate their socio-economic security. Hearing on it, a division bench comprising the Chief Justice, S Muralidhar and Justice KR Mohapatra has noticed to the Government of India and Government of Odisha for the status report. According to the petition, the migrant workers should be empanelled in the state before they venture to other states in search of job. Similarly, the agencies, institutions and persons those outsource labourers should be registered before the Commissioner of labour. In fact, it’s not being carried out in the state. As a result, the socio-economic security of the workmen working interstate is at stake. In the meantime, around 139 million migrant workers witnessed unprecedented crisis during the nationwide lockdown last year. Notably, the Ministry of Labour, Odisha Chief Secretary and the Commissioner for Labour and Employment have been party to the case.
