Woman and two men assaulted and tied to electric pole in Odisha's Mayurbhanj over alleged affair

Bhubaneswar, September 13: In a disturbing incident in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, a woman and two men were allegedly beaten and tied to an electric pole on suspicions of an illicit affair. The shocking act occurred in Begunia village under the Jashipur police jurisdiction.

As per reports, the woman, who hails from Kashipal village, had invited two male relatives to Jashipur on Friday to assist her with shopping. While returning to her village on a motorcycle around 4 pm, the trio was intercepted by a group of locals, along with members of the woman's family, at the village square.

Accusing them of engaging in an extramarital relationship, the villagers tied the three individuals to an electric pole in an open field nearby. They were then brutally beaten with sticks, slippers, and rods. Eyewitnesses described the attack as ‘brutal and inhumane.’

Upon receiving a distress call later in the evening, the Jashipur police rushed to the scene and freed the victims. They were then transported to Jashipur Medical for medical care.

A case has been filed, and two individuals have been detained for questioning. Investigations are ongoing to identify additional perpetrators involved in the mob assault.

The incident has stirred widespread outrage, with human rights activists decrying the revival of mob justice and kangaroo court-like punishments in rural Odisha. However, the police have not yet released an official statement on the matter.
