Bhubaneswar, Mar 17: With the announcement of the date for the Pipili by-election, Odisha’s three major parties have started preparations for the bypoll slated to be held on April 17.

Political analysts are speculating that the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) will be nominating its candidate from the family of the former MLA Pradeep Maharathy to cash upon the sympathy wave.

However, this may be tough for BJD president to give party ticket to the family of the departed Pipili MLA as both Maharathy’s wife and son had expressed their desire to contest the by-election.

Pratibha Maharathy, wife of deceased BJD MLA Pradeep Maharathy had expressed her desire to fight the by-poll on a BJD ticket while her son has the same desire to contest on the ruling party’s ticket.

Speaking to media persons, the deceased MLA’s son Rudra Pratap had said that he has experience in election management and his mother too has experience of political affairs. However, they would accept the decision taken by the party, he clarified.

Pratibha had said that she would be very happy, if she was given a chance. “It does not matter who wants what. The decision regarding candidate selection depends on BJD president Naveen Patnaik. I will also accept whatever decision is taken by the BJD president,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party also exuded confidence of winning the seat in the wake of good performance in a rural local body bypoll in the constituency. While it is being expected that there would a poll fight between BJD and BJP, senior Congress leader Suresh Kumar Routray said the party will give a tough fight to both the BJP and the BJD in the election.

By-election to Pipili Assembly constituency will be held on April 17 as announced by the Election Commission of India. The bypoll was necessitated by the death of sitting BJD MLA Pradeep Kumar Maharathy on October 4 in 2020.

The schedule of the bypoll will be notified on March 23 and the last date for filing of nomination has been fixed on March 30.

The result will be declared on May 2.
