Bhubaneswar, Oct 23: Even though Congress has been facing crushing defeats in the elections, the party had its stronghold in the undivided Koraput district. But will it remain the same after the quit of PCC working president and former Nowrangpur MP Pradeep Majhi ?
Pradeep Majhi, who had a considerable influence among the tribals of Nabarangpur and Malkangiri districts, has left the party on October 22.
Political observers believe that Pradeep’s quit from the party will severely affect politics in Undivided Koraput. It’s now BJP versus BJD in Undivided Koraput.
Though the ruling Biju Janata Dal had won the Koraput and Nabarangpur assembly seats, it had however a tough fight with the Congress as Majhi had his influence on the voters, especially on tribals.
Majhi, who has quit the Congress, is expected to join the ruling BJD. If Majhi joins the regional party, this will help the party, say the political observers.
On the other hand, the BJP is hopeful to derive the benefit from the quit of Majhi from the Congress. “ The leader has left the party, but the workers are yet in Congress. The BJP will get votes of the disgruntled elements of Congress,” said BJP leaders.
Meanwhile, Congress is chalking out its strategies to showcase its power in the Undivided Koraput district. “Party will hold rallies showing its organizational strength in this region. Odisha Congress president Niranjan Patnaik and in-charge Dr A Chellakumar will visit Koraput on October 31,” said a senior Congress leader adding that the party will also hold a huge rally in Malkangiri.
