BJP’s national executive meet in Hyderabad which concluded on Sunday delivered a resounding message that the party is here to stay at top of the political ladder of the nation for the next three-four decades. It is not unsurprising in the given political spectrum in the country where BJP is ruling most of the states or is in the ruling alliance, the latest being Maharashtra, the richest state in India. Its overreach is growing, and so is its acceptability as the sole party that can define and redefine politics not only for the countrymen but also enhance India’s image at the global stage as “ Vishwaguru” or the world leader.

Home Minister Amit Shah’s words that the party would reign supreme for the next 30-40 years has to be seen in this backdrop. It has expounded certain fundamentals beyond the common understanding that the BJP wanted to rule the country for next few decades at the Centre and in the states. That is just one part of the narrative, the larger picture is quite profound and leads to the question, how does BJP plan to do so. Instant answer should be drawn from what all has happened in the country during the past eight years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi –   widening acceptability and appreciation of the style of governance which has benefited the poor and the marginalized sections the most.

India was faced with unprecedented crisis inflicted by the arrival of Covid-19 pandemic. There was immense pain all across the country. It was once in a century challenge. The pain also gave birth to many doubts as the people swung between one despair to the other. The disease was killing people. So were the economic crisis that accompanied the deadly pandemic. Prime Minister stood firm in his resolve to pull the country and the countrymen out of this deadly pandemic. He invested in where it was needed -science. His call was for vaccine to curb the ill-effects of the pandemic on the lives and economy of the masses. And when the vaccine arrived, things started looking up.

Nearly three years before the pandemic struck the country and unleashed its horrors, not much attention was paid to the demonetization announced and implemented by the Modi Government since November 2016. The step was reviled by the opposition, and termed as initiation of the dark era for economy of the country. There were certain unpalatable sights of the long queues of people outside banks to get the money. Rest the clock to the pandemic days of 2020 when the shopkeepers refused to take the currency notes, but the ATM cards and the digital mode saved them from catching infection. No one has calculated how many lives were saved by this visionary step of the Modi government. In hindsight, now that step has turned out to be a boon for the country. . Not only the precious lives were saved but also the economy.

The Modi government also revised the political curriculum of the Indian nation in the past years, which helped the BJP to speak loudly about its will to end terrorism which had plagued the country in the years gone by. There was a lop-sided response to the acts of terror, including 26/11, and the killing of thousands of people in Kashmir. This had diminished the image of the country, and it was seen vulnerable. When terrorism strikes at strikes at rapid speed, it not only kills people and soldiers but also dents the confidence of the nation. But with the cross-border retaliatory strikes in the wake of September 2016 Uri massacre of soldiers, and February 14, 2019 suicide bombing in Pulwama that had left 40 CRPF men dead, the Central government rewrote the anti-terrorism doctrine. The world has started speaking about it, appreciating the need to curb terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.  The Modi government has transformed the fight against terrorism from ambivalence to attacking it from all sides- crushing its ecosystem.

Of course, with regard to Jammu and Kashmir, which has been international attention because of the conflict initiated by the Pakistan through its local support system, the abolition of Article 370 made a difference to the whole concept about the status of Kashmir. The constitutional changes did break the barriers, but more importantly it has changed the perceptions. India is more integrated in thought and perceptions. There is change in the international idea about Kashmir, it is retreating from the global lexicon as “disputed area.”, and that has been the biggest achievement on the diplomatic and political front for India.

The vision that unfolded in the past eight years under the leadership of Modi has laid the strong foundations, on which the BJP can build its future plans to stay at helm of affairs in India well beyond 2050-2060.
