Bhubaneswar, Aug 15: His military career may have been brief, but the courage and sacrifice of retired Captain Sambit Parija have left an enduring mark. From Operation Parakram in 2001 to Operation Rakshak in 2004, the Odia soldier served in some of the most challenging counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

A resident of Bhubaneswar, Captain Parija joined the Indian Armed Forces at the age of 21 after graduating from the National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune, in 2000, followed by training at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, in 2001.

A Young Officer Sent Straight to the Frontline

The year 2001 proved to be a defining chapter in Captain Parija’s life. Soon after joining the Army, he was deployed to Jammu and Kashmir, where tensions were high following the attack on the Indian Parliament.

During Operation Parakram, Captain Parija confronted terrorism on the ground and played a role in countering militant activities. His service and bravery were recognised with a Sena Medal.

For a young officer who had only recently entered military service, the experience marked the beginning of a remarkable journey of courage and duty.

Operation Rakshak: When Death Came Close

Three years later, Captain Parija once again found himself on the frontline during Operation Rakshak, the Army's counter-insurgency operation in Jammu and Kashmir.

He spent long hours guarding the region and confronting militants. But one mission turned into a tragedy that would change his life forever.

During an operation, a military vehicle carrying soldiers was travelling down a mountainous route when it came under attack. The vehicle lost control and plunged down the mountain.

Captain Parija was inside the vehicle.

The crash claimed the lives of three soldiers, while Captain Parija miraculously survived. However, he suffered serious injuries that would eventually force him to take voluntary retirement from the Army.

He Survived, But Never Forgot His Comrades

Surviving the crash came at an enormous emotional cost. The memories of the three fellow soldiers who lost their lives remained with Captain Parija long after he left military service.

His injuries brought an early end to his active military career, but not to his sense of duty or his love for the nation.

Even years after retirement, the spirit of the soldier remains alive in him.

Captain Sambit Parija may not have spent decades in uniform, but his journey took him from the training grounds of the NDA and IMA to some of India's most challenging operational environments.

He faced terrorism, served in Jammu and Kashmir, participated in Operation Parakram and Operation Rakshak, earned a Sena Medal, survived a deadly military vehicle accident and ultimately carried the memories of his fallen comrades into civilian life.

His story is a reminder that the length of a soldier's service does not define the magnitude of his contribution.

For Captain Sambit Parija, a few years in uniform were enough to create a lifetime of courage, sacrifice and service to the nation.
