Weightlifter Gyaneshwari Yadav Secures Remarkable Silver Medal at Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026

Debut Performance Shines Bright

Gyaneshwari Yadav claimed an impressive silver medal in her Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow on Monday. Competing in the women's 53kg weightlifting category, she pushed her limits against Nigerian gold medallist Onome Omolola Didih. Her podium finish brings India's current medal tally to five, including one gold, three silvers, and one bronze. Indian weightlifters have historically dominated Commonwealth events, and Yadav's fresh success ensures this rich legacy continues into a new generation.

During the competitive snatch event, the 23-year-old athlete started incredibly strong with an 82kg lift. She quickly improved her mark to 85kg before successfully executing a phenomenal 88kg lift. This specific achievement officially broke the existing Commonwealth Games record for her weight category. However, Didih answered back fiercely by snatching a remarkable 93kg to firmly grab the lead. Moving into the clean and jerk round, both athletes showed incredible power and refined technique. Yadav opened forcefully with 103kg, which gave her a 191kg total and established yet another Games record. She then successfully lifted 107kg to significantly close the competitive gap on her talented Nigerian rival.

Strategic Shift Yields Results

Knowing that gold was still physically possible, Yadav bravely attempted a 111kg final lift. She completed the attempt flawlessly to finish with a 199kg total, claiming one more record. Didih ultimately secured the gold medal with a stunning 113kg lift, bringing her winning total to 206kg. Canadian weightlifter Rebeka Groulx rounded out the international podium, taking the bronze medal with a 178kg total. Yadav previously competed effectively in the slightly lighter 49kg regional division. She intelligently moved up into the 53kg weight class to avoid facing fellow Indian Olympic star Mirabai Chanu. That strategic decision proved immensely fruitful today, marking a truly major career milestone for the young Indian sportswoman.
