‘Waving Tricolour Is Not a Crime’: BJD Leader Sujata Rout Backs Delhi Protests

Bhubaneswar, October 17: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Sujata Rout has backed youth-led protests, asserting that waving or hoisting the national flag is a democratic right and “not a crime”. She reiterated the party’s support for peaceful and non-violent demonstrations across the country.

Speaking to reporters, Rout emphasised the importance of protecting constitutional rights, freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly, while reaffirming the BJD’s support for the younger generation.

“The BJD has always stood with Gen Z. I believe that waving or hoisting the Tricolour is not a crime in India. Therefore, we strongly support any form of protest that is non-violent and peaceful,” she said.

Her remarks come amid growing debate over youth-led demonstrations and the exercise of democratic rights, with the regional party stressing the need for peaceful dissent and constructive engagement with young people.

Meanwhile, Rout congratulated students across Odisha following the recently concluded college student elections, claiming that the BJD’s student wing, Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD), secured victories in 70 per cent of colleges despite alleged intimidation and the misuse of administrative machinery by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Accusing the BJP-led state government of using unfair means to influence the elections, Rout alleged that student leaders were subjected to pressure through college authorities, police and the administration.

“I would like to congratulate the entire college student community of Odisha on the excellent results in the college elections. The Biju Janata Dal has always stood behind the youth and students of Odisha, and we will continue to stand with them,” she said.

Targeting the BJP government, Rout alleged that the ruling party resorted to violence, muscle power and money power during the elections. She further claimed that attempts were made to intimidate BCJD leaders through institutional pressure.

Despite these alleged tactics, she said, the BCJD managed to win in 70 per cent of colleges across the state.

“They have shown that truth and non-violence always prevail,” Rout said, adding that the growing popularity of BJD president Naveen Patnaik among Odisha’s youth had become a source of concern for the BJP.
