Bhubaneswar, July 27: As monsoon rains continue across parts of Odisha, the state’s Water Resources Department has reported fluctuating water levels in key rivers such as Baitarani, Jalaka, and Subarnarekha. While some rivers are showing a declining trend, others are nearing or have surpassed danger levels, prompting intensified monitoring and precautionary measures by authorities.

Baitarani River: High but receding

At Anandapur, the Baitarani River’s water level stood at 35.78 meters, below the danger mark of 38.36 meters, and is showing a declining trend. However, in Akhuapada, the water level remains at 18.54 meters, which is slightly above the danger level of 18.33 meters, but is also receding gradually.

Jalaka River: Stabilizing at Mathani

The Jalaka River at Mathani recorded a water level of 6.67 meters, above the danger level of 6.50 meters. Authorities have observed a consistent drop in the water flow, indicating a potential easing of the situation in this region.

Subarnarekha River: Mixed trends raise alarms

At Jamsholaghat, the Subarnarekha River’s water level was at 51.6 meters — significantly above the danger mark of 49.16 meters — though the flow is reportedly reducing. In contrast, at Rajghat, the river was measured at 10.20 meters, still below the danger level of 10.36 meters but rising. The Water Resources Department estimates that the Subarnarekha could reach a peak water level of 11.40 meters by 9 PM tonight (July 27).

State response: 24x7 monitoring and coordination

The State Flood Control Room under the Department of Water Resources is operating round-the-clock (24x7), closely monitoring all developments. Officials have alerted district collectors of Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Balasore to assess local flood conditions and, where necessary, initiate timely evacuations of low-lying areas and conduct relief operations.

Officials and staff from the Water Resources Department are maintaining continuous coordination with local authorities to manage the evolving flood situation. Emergency teams remain deployed across vulnerable regions to ensure public safety and support flood response activities.
