Dehradun, July 12: In a crackdown on fraudsters exploiting religious sentiments, the Uttarakhand Police launched "Operation Kalanemi" following directives from Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The operation targets imposters masquerading as saints to deceive people in the name of religion.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh, police teams carried out coordinated raids across various police station areas in Dehradun on Saturday. A total of 23 fake babas were arrested, including 10 individuals from other states. These imposters were reportedly luring vulnerable individuals—particularly women and youth—under the guise of spiritual solutions to personal or domestic problems.

"In compliance with the CM's orders, all station in-charges have been directed to identify and take strict action against such fraudulent individuals posing as saints," said SSP Singh.

Hindu religious bodies have welcomed the initiative. Ravindra Puri, President of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, applauded the campaign, stating, "We thank the Chief Minister for acting against those who cheat Kanwariyas and defame our religion. These imposters demand money and even abuse pilgrims who refuse. Strict action is necessary."

Supporting the move, the Akhand Parshuram Akhada emphasized the need to verify the identities of such seers. "Aadhar cards of these imposters must be checked. While India aspires to be a Vishwaguru, only genuine saints should represent our spiritual heritage," a representative stated.

State BJP President Mahendra Bhatt also endorsed the crackdown, asserting that criminal elements attempting to disrupt the social fabric must face legal consequences. "Everyone must adhere to the law. Those who disturb society will be dealt with sternly," he said.

'Operation Kalanemi' marks a significant step by the Uttarakhand government to protect public faith and uphold the sanctity of Devbhoomi by rooting out deceitful elements posing as religious figures.
