New Delhi, September 30: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) project for Delhi Police at an estimated cost of Rs 1,789.52 crore, including taxes.
The project will cover 42 major traffic corridors and be implemented in three phases over 24 months, followed by five years of operation and maintenance.
The technology-driven system will use real-time traffic data, adaptive traffic signals, automated enforcement and integrated command-and-control centres to improve traffic flow and road safety in the national capital.
Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the existing 1,529 traffic signals largely operate on fixed timings, while the new system will dynamically adjust signal durations based on traffic conditions. It will also help manage congestion at roundabouts and provide priority passage to emergency vehicles.
The ITMS will include 1,092 Adaptive Traffic Control Systems and 1,029 enforcement locations. It will detect violations such as red-light jumping, speeding, wrong-way driving, illegal parking and non-use of helmets and seat belts.
The system will also provide real-time information on congestion, diversions and parking through Variable Message Signs and digital platforms. AI-based analytics will assist in identifying stolen and blacklisted vehicles and repeat traffic offenders.
Delhi Police will implement the project through a competitively selected Master System Integrator, with C-DAC providing technical support as Project Management Consultant. The initiative is aimed at improving traffic management, reducing delays, strengthening enforcement and making better use of Delhi’s existing road network.
