Under trial prisoner dies in Puri jail, family cries foul

Puri, Feb 7: An under trial prisoner of Puri jail died on Saturday under mysterious circumstances. Sridhar Das (50 yr), a native of Bangimuhan under Sea Beach police station was sent into judicial custody on January 11 following his arrest. He fell ill on Friday. As his health condition deteriorated, he was admitted to the district headquarters hospital on Saturday where the attending doctor declared him dead. However, Sridhar’s family alleged that he was beaten to death in the jail. On the other hand, superintendent of the jail Chittaranjan Sahu rejected such allegations and clarified that Sridhar was admitted to the hospital after he fell ill two days ago and died late Saturday night while undergoing treatment.
