Two Soldiers Killed as J&K Operation Enters 9th Day
The long-running anti-terror exercise, 'Operation Akhal', has entered its ninth day in Jammu and Kashmir, with security forces suffering a significant loss. Two soldiers were killed and four others were injured in an overnight gunfight in the Kulgam district, highlighting the intense and protracted nature of one of the valley's longest recent encounters.
Grueling and Intense Encounter
The operation, which began on August 1, is focused on a dense forest area in Akhal. According to army sources, at least three heavily-armed terrorists are still believed to be hiding in natural cave-like structures, using the difficult terrain to their advantage. Security forces, including Para commandos, have maintained a tight cordon and are using drones and helicopters to track the militants.
The fighting has been relentless, with intense firing and explosions continuing day and night. The terrorists are reported to be well-trained and equipped with night-vision devices and long-range rifles. So far, more than five terrorists have been killed in the operation.
Impact on Local Community
The sustained violence has had a profound impact on the local population. Residents of the nearby Akhal village have started to evacuate to safer locations, with many women and children left traumatized by the constant sounds of the gunfight. Authorities have appointed nodal officers to assist the evacuating families and coordinate emergency responses. The operation continues as forces work to neutralize the remaining hidden terrorists.
