Lucknow, Jan 19: At least two children were killed by leopards in separate cases near Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary (KWS) in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh, a forest official said on Tuesday.

According to reports, a kid identified as Ramtej (9) was attacked and dragged by a leopard from Rikkha Pakadiya Deewan village under Motipur police limits on Monday evening.

Following this, a joint team of police and forest officials launched a massive search operation in the adjoining forest and spotted the half-eaten body of the kid in the bushes in Ghusri in Motipur forest range on Tuesday.

In a separate incident, a kid identified as Aditya (4) was also attacked and taken away by a leopard from Mangalpurva village in the Motipur range on Monday.

Later, the joint team police and forest officials recovered his head from the forest following a search operation.

The families of the victims have been given Rs 10,000 each and attempts are being made to give them a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each, said a forest official.

However, it is yet to be ascertained whether the attacks were done by the same leopard or not.

As many as four teams of forest officials have been deployed to catch the leopard and help of drone cameras will be taken to trace it, if needed. Villagers have been advised not to head toward the forest area, the forest official added.

“It is unlikely that the same leopard would attack within a matter of hours,” said a wildlife expert.
