Bhubaneswar, June 17: Two people have died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Bhubaneswar’s Laxmisagar area, prompting an investigation by the Excise Department.
The deceased have been identified as Biswajit Beura and Santosh Naik, also known as Apei. Both were residents of Laxmisagar and close friends. Apei reportedly passed away four days ago, while Biswit succumbed on Tuesday, said sources.
According to sources, the two were among a group of five friends who had purchased alcohol from a local liquor shop in Laxmisagar. The group consumed the liquor during a feast, after which all five reportedly fell seriously ill. The deaths of Biswajit and Apei have heightened concerns that the liquor may have been adulterated.
In response to the incident, angry locals gathered outside the liquor shop and staged a protest, demanding accountability. The Excise Department has since sealed the outlet and collected liquor samples for laboratory testing as part of its investigation.
