Bhubaneswar: Taking strong note of the cutting of large number of trees at Balarampur in Dhenkanal district for building a brewery, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) today directed the Odisha Government to submit an affidavit in the matter.
The tribunal, after observing that there was violation of Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 in the tree felling incident in Dhenkanal district directed the State Government to file an affidavit by January 21.
The tribunal posted the matter for next hearing on January 21.
Earlier on November 19, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik cancelled the setting up of a beer-bottling plant in Dhenkanal district after a clash between locals and police over the felling of hundreds of trees for the project.
Locals were opposing the administration’s move to cut down over 950 trees for the project by a private firm, P&A Bottlers Ltd, at Balarampur.
The agitators, mostly women, had clung to tree trunks in their attempt to stop the felling of trees, leading to a tussle between them and the police personnel. It triggered sharp protest from different quarters, prompting the Chief Minister to order an inquiry and stop the felling of trees in the area.
A villager of Balarampur moved the NGT seeking justice.
