Toy train at Nandankanan Zoological Park ready to restart

Bhubaneswar, Dec 8:The popular toy train at Nandankanan Zoological Park, which had been out of service since January, is set to resume operations soon following extensive repairs and upgrades. The service was suspended after the train, carrying over 50 tourists, derailed midway on January 19. In view of visitor safety, authorities halted operations and undertook a complete overhaul of the system.

Officials confirmed that all mechanical components have now been replaced and the train is fully ready for operation. With Nandankanan’s Foundation Day approaching, the toy train is expected to be back on track shortly.

The toy train service was first introduced in August 1971 and operated directly by the zoo authorities until 2006. Frequent mechanical failures due to its diesel engine led to prolonged shutdowns, including a two-year suspension until 2008. After repairs, the service was handed over to a private contractor, but by 2014 it halted once again.

In 2016, Nandankanan authorities decided to revive the attraction with a pollution-free, battery-operated model. Between October 2016 and December 2020, RITES Limited undertook major renovation of the track and platform under MCL’s CSR funding, initially costing ₹305 lakh and later rising to ₹498.63 lakh. The new battery-powered train, built by Amusement Rides and Fyum World, New Delhi, cost ₹81.87 lakh.

The revamped toy train was inaugurated by the Forest Minister on October 8, 2021. However, it continued to face frequent technical issues and operated inconsistently. With the latest round of repairs now complete, authorities are optimistic about a smooth restart of the much-loved attraction.
