Tokyo, Aug 1: India shuttler PV Sindhu has won a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics. She defeated China’s He Bingjiao by 21-13, 21-15 in the bronze medal match on Sunday.
She lost her semifinal clash against Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu-Ying, but she has a chance to redeem herself as she faced off against China’s He Bingjiao in the Women’s Singles Bronze medal match. Sindhu who had also won a silver medal in Rio Olympics in 2016 became the second athlete from India after wrestler Sushil Kumar to win two Olympic medals.
Sindhu becomes the second Indian athlete in Tokyo Olympics 2020 after Mirabai Chanu to win a medal.
On Friday, Sindhu had stormed into the semi-finals of the women’s singles event after defeating Japan’s number four seed Akane Yamaguchi in the quarterfinals. Sindhu defeated Yamaguchi 21-13, 22-20. The quarterfinal clash between Sindhu and Yamaguchi had lasted for 56 minutes.
