Bangiriposi, May 3: A major road accident occurred late Tuesday night at Dwarasuni Ghat on National Highway-49 under Bangiriposi police limits in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district when a timber-laden truck overturned onto a car. The mishap left the car driver critically injured, while other occupants narrowly escaped with their lives.
According to reports, four youths were travelling in a car bearing registration number JH-05AY-3898 from Kolkata to Jayantgarh under Jagannathpur police station in Jharkhand. While passing through the Dwarasuni Ghat section, a timber-loaded truck (WB-33A-8086) coming from the Bisoi side allegedly attempted to overtake another truck.
During the overtaking manoeuvre, the truck reportedly suffered a brake failure, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle overturned and fell directly onto the car, crushing a portion of it under the heavy load.
Personnel from the Bangiriposi Police and Fire Services Department rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. All the occupants were pulled out of the damaged vehicle and shifted to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
The condition of the car driver, who remained trapped under the wreckage for some time, was reported to be critical. He was later referred to the District Headquarters Hospital in Keonjhar for advanced treatment.
The accident led to a massive traffic congestion on the ghat road, disrupting vehicular movement for several hours. Police and emergency teams worked through the night to clear the wreckage. Traffic movement returned to normal on Wednesday morning after the road was completely cleared.
