Karur (Tamil Nadu), Sep 28: The death toll in the tragic stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) political rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur has risen to 39, officials confirmed on Sunday.
As per reports, the stampede occurred on Saturday during a rally at Velusamypuram in Karur which was being addressed by party president and actor Vijay. At least 39 people lost their lives and more than 50 others were injured in the tragedy.
The public meeting was part of Vijay’s fast-growing outreach campaign across Tamil Nadu.
According to police and local officials, thousands of supporters began assembling on the narrow approach roads from early morning, hoping to secure a good spot for the evening address.
The event began around 7:20 p.m., but as the crowd grew in the confined area, a section became dangerously overcrowded. Witnesses reported that people started fainting and stumbling as panic spread through the packed crowd. In the ensuing chaos, several victims were trampled before rescue teams could intervene.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin rushed to Karur late at night to console grieving families and visit the injured at Karur Medical College Hospital. He confirmed that among the 39 people who lost their lives, nine were children and 16 were women.
The death toll may increase as several individuals remain in critical condition. The state government has appointed a one-member judicial commission to investigate the incident.
