New Delhi, November 16: The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to address concerns regarding the implementation of menstrual hygiene policies in schools, emphasizing the need for a clearer understanding of the ground realities.

A bench comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Pankaj Mithal asked Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Aishwarya Bhati to examine the issues raised by the petitioner and provide a detailed response by December 3, the next scheduled hearing.

“We request Aishwarya Bhati, the learned ASG, to look into the aspects highlighted by the petitioner and clarify the position by the next date of hearing," stated the bench during the November 12 proceedings.

The court was informed that the Union of India has formulated a National Policy on Menstrual Hygiene for School-Going Girls, outlining its vision, objectives, target audience, and stakeholder responsibilities. However, ASG Bhati acknowledged that significant efforts are still required for effective implementation.

The ASG also highlighted that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare would work closely with States and Union Territories to develop action plans tailored to local needs. These plans aim to ensure a comprehensive rollout of the policy for government and government-aided schools.

The matter remains under the Supreme Court's scrutiny, with further updates expected on December 3.
