Subhash Chandra Clears Heavy 22000 Crore Debt with Tiny 6.5 Crore NCLT Approved Repayment

Zee founder secures controversial debt settlement sparking political backlash

Zee group founder Subhash Chandra has secured legal approval to settle his staggering Rs 22,006.57 crore creditor claims for a mere Rs 6.5 crore. National Company Law Tribunal judicial member Nilesh Sharma cleared this personal insolvency repayment plan, effectively handing lenders a stunning 99.97 percent haircut. Historically, India introduced the bankruptcy code to strictly maximize creditor recovery, meaning such extreme write-downs remain exceptionally rare in major financial defaults. Despite fierce pushback from major lenders, the tribunal stood by the resolution because creditors representing 80.81 percent of the voting share backed the deal. Dissenting financial institutions, led by LIC Housing Finance, argued that the payout was incredibly low and legally flawed. LIC Housing Finance highlighted that against its recognized claim of Rs 1,322.39 crore, it would receive barely Rs 38.09 lakh, amounting to a fraction of a percent. However, the tribunal ruled that it could not override the commercial wisdom of the consenting majority, noting Chandra's personal estate valuation fell well below the offered settlement. The judicial bench clarified that its role remains strictly supervisory and it cannot force dissenting creditors to pursue separate recoveries outside this approved framework. Out of the approved total amount, Rs 6.25 crore will go directly to creditors while Rs 25 lakh covers process costs.

Political Backlash and Public Reactions

Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya quickly seized on the news to highlight his own ongoing financial battles. Taking to social media, he contrasted Chandra's situation with his own case, pointing out that banks recovered Rs 14,100 crore from him against a judgment debt of Rs 6,203 crore. Mallya sarcastically congratulated Chandra while questioning the fairness of Indian debt resolution practices. Meanwhile, Congress Member of Parliament Jairam Ramesh strongly criticised the tribunal's decision. He mocked the outcome by calling it a complete tonsure rather than a simple haircut, claiming the ruling ridicules the existing insolvency framework.
