Bhubaneswar: Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro today directed the State Government to make a statement in the House on the alleged rape and suicide of a girl in Tentei village under Nugaon police station in Jagatsinghpur district on Tuesday.
The Speaker’s direction came after opposition BJP and Congress members created pandemonium in the House resulting in frequent adjournments.
During the Zero Hour, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Narasingha Mishra raised the rape and subsequent suicide case of a girl in Tentei village under Nugaon police station and alleged inaction of police.
He demanded that Speaker instruct the Chief Minister to make a statement in the floor of the House over the issue.
“The Chief Minister asked MLAs not to politicise human tragedy particularly the crime against women. Here, a report was published about the rape of a girl and subsequent suicide and also police inactio,” said Mishra.
“Wasn’t BJD SC Cell chief and Tirtol MLA Bishnu Charan Das’s statement on the rape case political,” Mishra wanted to know.
If the Chief Minister thinks that cases of harassment against women shouldn’t be discussed inside the Assembly, he has no moral right to retain the CM, said Mishra.
When the Speaker asked Mishra to conclude without giving a ruling, both Congress and BJP MLAs rushed into the Well of the House and shouted anti-Government slogans.
Unable to run the House, the Speaker adjourned the House till 12.32 pm and subsequently thrice till 3 pm. When the House again sat at 3 pm the din continued to persist. Amid the din, the Speaker adjourned the House at 3.04 pm till 3.34 pm.
When the House met again, the Speaker gave the ruling asking the Government to make a statement in the House over the alleged rape and suicide on Tuesday.
