Mumbai, April 14: The Narcotics Control Bureau on Thursday said that it has arrested a South African national at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport here on charges of smuggling drugs and seized a huge cache of brown sugar from his possession.

Acting on special intelligence inputs regarding the smuggling of brown sugar, the NCB Mumbai Zonal team intercepted a passenger, whose identity has not been disclosed, from Johannesburg when he landed at the Mumbai Airport.

On conducting a thorough search of his luggage, the officials revealed a hidden cavity in a red-colored trolley bag with four packs of heroin weighing around 3.98 kilograms and seized it.

The estimated worth of the seized brown sugar is around Rs 25 crore in the market.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.

Officials said that with the air travel restrictions lifted after the relaxation of the pandemic norms, the NCB is keeping a hawk’s eye for suspicious passengers who may be involved in the international trafficking of narcotics.
