Puri, June 5: In a major step towards enhancing safety and crowd control during the world-famous Rath Yatra in Puri, the Odisha Police is set to roll out a state-of-the-art mobile application integrated with AI-powered CCTV cameras and drone feeds.
This innovative move aims to provide real-time alerts and improve response times for security personnel stationed across the pilgrim town.
A prototype of the app is scheduled to be tested during Snana Purnima, a key ritual preceding the Rath Yatra, to evaluate its performance and reliability.
Designed to assist on-ground officers in managing large gatherings and potential emergencies, the app will primarily focus on high-density zones such as the Bada Danda and other sensitive locations in Puri.
Senior police officials will monitor the situation from an integrated command and control centre at the Town Police Station. Supplementary control rooms have also been established at Kumbharpada and the Government Railway Police (GRP) station to ensure coordinated surveillance.
The technological infrastructure includes a robust network of 80 pre-existing CCTV cameras, supplemented by 275 newly installed units across the town.
Additionally, around 100 CCTV cameras have been placed at railway stations to monitor the flow of pilgrims arriving for the grand chariot festival. Six drones are currently available for aerial surveillance, and more may be hired depending on operational needs.
In view of potential threats, anti-drone measures are also being introduced to safeguard the skies during the festivities.
Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania recently chaired a high-level review meeting with senior officers to assess the preparedness and finalise the security blueprint for Rath Yatra 2025. The integration of artificial intelligence and drone technology is expected to revolutionise traditional security arrangements and offer a tech-driven edge to the overall management of the mega religious event.
With lakhs of devotees expected to gather for Lord Jagannath’s annual journey, the Odisha Police's tech-enabled approach aims to ensure a safe, smooth, and spiritually fulfilling experience for all.
