Jagannath Temple to remain closed for facial ritual of the Lords

Puri, Oct 27: Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri will remain closed for the devotees for four hours on Wednesday for the ‘Banakalagi’ rituals of the Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, informed the Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration (SJTA). The ‘Banakalagi’ rituals will be performed from 4 pm to 8 pm today, said the SJTA. Sources said the ‘Banakalagi’ rituals are held secretly in which deities are decorated with different colours to restore their original look as part of the rituals. Different types of natural colours like Hingula, Haritala, Kasturi, Keshar, glue of Kaintha are used to prepare Banaka, which is used to decorate the sibling deities.
