Extreme heat batters western districts alongside coastal thunderstorm warnings

Western Odisha continues boiling under severe heat conditions, with Titilagarh recording a blistering maximum temperature of 45.8 degrees Celsius over the past 24 hours. Sonepur, Bhawanipatna, Sambalpur, Bolangir, and Boudh districts also endured intense heatwave conditions, leaving residents struggling against extreme daytime temperatures. Meteorologists report that this region’s distinct geographical trough frequently traps hot, dry winds coming from the northwest plains during late May, creating prolonged periods of extreme heat. Bhubaneswar and Cuttack registered slightly lower temperatures at 38.4 and 37.8 degrees Celsius, respectively. However, hot and humid conditions in places like Jharsuguda and Phulbani are causing significant discomfort. Nighttime provides little relief for some areas, as Bolangir and Sambalpur remain under warm night warnings.

Weather Forecast and Changes

Forecasters predict no significant shift in maximum daytime temperatures across the state for the next four days. Afterward, mercury levels will likely drop by two to three degrees Celsius. While western districts suffer under the blazing sun, coastal and southern regions are bracing for turbulent weather.

Thunderstorm and Lightning Alerts

Regional meteorological experts issued specific yellow warnings for isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. These severe weather alerts apply to several districts including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Khordha, and Puri. Similar conditions will persist intermittently over the coming week.

Rainfall Expectations

Precipitation data highlights recent isolated showers, with Sarasakana in Mayurbhanj receiving 16.0 mm of rain. Current models suggest isolated light to moderate rainfall will continue across coastal and southern districts over the next seven days. This incoming moisture provides temporary respite from the scorching heat but brings associated risks of lightning strikes and strong squalls. Citizens in vulnerable areas must remain indoors during sudden weather shifts and avoid open fields when storm clouds gather. Staying updated via official broadcasting channels remains crucial as these localized pressure systems can develop rapidly. The simultaneous occurrence of extreme heat in one zone and storm warnings in another paints a complex picture of regional atmospheric behavior right now. This specific environmental contrast demands constant public awareness.
