Sudden Water Surge Traps Labourers

Flash floods and debris surged into an under-construction Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Ltd (THDC) tunnel in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on Thursday evening.Eighteen people were working inside the project site in Pipalkoti when water rushed in at around 6:30 pm. Strong currents unexpectedly swept many workers towards the exit gate.Local authorities instantly mobilised multiple disaster response units to pull the stranded labourers out of the danger zone.

District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar confirmed that teams safely rescued 14 to 15 individuals from the flooded site so far. Rescue personnel remain hopeful about locating the remaining trapped workers within the next few hours. Chamoli Police Chief Surjeet Singh Pawar reported that medical teams with ambulances and law enforcement officers immediately secured the location.National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) members are actively clearing heavy mud to find survivors.Such coordinated efforts reflect the standard emergency protocol in this highly vulnerable Himalayan terrain, which frequently faces severe natural disasters.
