Bhubaneswar, Feb 25: Science and technology applications are important in area of agriculture, health and nutrition security as well as protection and conservation of the rich traditions of the tribal communities.
Food Supply and Consumer Welfare Minister Ranedra Pratap Swain said inaugurating a two-day national conclave of tribal development organized by the National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad (NASI) and Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneswar here on Monday.
The event was planned to discuss the outcome of the several projects implemented by the NASI with support of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India across the country on science and technology applications for welfare of tribal populations.
ST and SC Development, Minorities and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Jagannath Saraka highlighted various initiatives of the state government in empowering the tribal communities through formation of district councils in tribal dominated districts of Odisha for decentralized decision making.
NASI president Prof G Padmanaban and former Department of Biotechnology (DBT) Secretary Dr Manju Sharma, ILS Director Dr Ajay Parida, Dr Paramjit Khurana and Dr Satya Deo also spoke on the occasion.
As many as 20 stalls have been put up in the ILS campus showcasing tribal products and food grains from different states of the country.
