New Delhi, July 22: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Wednesday passed a resolution condemning the alleged lathi charge on students and members of the legal fraternity, and demanded an immediate, impartial and time-bound investigation into the incident.

In its resolution dated July 22, 2026, the SCBA described the alleged use of excessive and disproportionate force against peaceful protesters as deeply disturbing and unacceptable in a democratic society. It stated that several students sustained serious injuries, while members of the legal fraternity, including SCBA members, were also hurt during the incident.

The Association urged the authorities to conduct a swift and impartial probe, identify those responsible for the alleged use of excessive force, and take appropriate legal action. It also called for proper medical care and assistance for all injured students and lawyers, besides urging measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Expressing solidarity with those injured, the SCBA reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding constitutional rights, human dignity and the rule of law. The resolution was issued by SCBA Honorary Secretary Pragya Baghel.

The development comes after Delhi Police used what it described as a mild lathi charge on Monday to disperse hundreds of protesters attempting to march towards Parliament. On Tuesday, several Congress leaders protesting at Lok Kalyan Marg were detained by Delhi Police, while security in the area was tightened with the deployment of paramilitary personnel.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, MPs Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and K.C. Venugopal led the protest at Lok Kalyan Marg. Kharge reiterated the party's support for the students' demands and criticised the government over the alleged lathi charge.Bottom of Form
