Delhi court remands two CJP leaders into judicial custody
Delhi Police transferred Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) figures Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka to Tihar Jail for a five-day judicial custody period on Wednesday. Special Executive Magistrate authorities ordered the remand following allegations that both activist violated peace bonds by entering Jantar Mantar. Officials recently denotified this location as a designated protest zone. Meanwhile, law enforcement permitted their associate, Ajinkya Shinde, to walk free after he signed a new peace agreement.
Authorities produced the three activist before the magistrate following their weekend detention. Police reports indicate the group unfurled the national flag at Jantar Mantar, obstructing deployed personnel from carrying out official duties. Records show 14 individuals faced detention during this operation, with first information reports registered at Parliament Street police station. Earlier, both Das and Ranka had signed one-year peace bonds following a previous demonstration in the capital.
CJP legal representatives contested the handling of these detentions. Ratna Singh, who leads the party's legal team, stated that authorities transported the politicians in a private vehicle at 3 am and denied them immediate access to counsel. Party founder Abhijeet Dipke publicly challenged the government over these arrests, criticising the state for suppressing public dissent.
Tensions remain high following the recent police order that shifted approved protest sites away from central Delhi. On October 11, Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar designated Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground, and CBD Ground as the only permitted venues for public demonstrations. CJP members argue this administrative shift intentionally reduces the visibility of public opposition against alleged electoral roll irregularities.
