Lanjigarh, May 19: Residents of Batelima Panchayat under Lanjigarh Block staged a road blockade on Sunday, protesting years of administrative neglect over the poor condition of connecting roads. The villagers blocked the key Batelima-Niali route from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., bringing traffic to a complete standstill for nearly seven hours.

Despite repeated appeals to the block and district administrations, as well as local political leaders, villagers allege no concrete steps have been taken to address their grievances. In response, they took to the streets, demanding immediate action to repair the critical road links.

The panchayat is connected to nearby areas through four RD roads — Batelima-Niali, Batelima-Kansari, Batelima-Sindhibahili, and Batelima-Lanjigarh — all of which have reportedly remained in a dilapidated state for years. Locals say this has severely affected emergency services, with ambulances unable to reach the area and critically ill patients, including pregnant women, often struggling to access timely medical care.

The protest ended after Batelima Sarpanch Karuna Majhi reached the site and held discussions with the agitated villagers. Following her assurance of taking up the matter with higher authorities, the blockade was lifted and traffic resumed.

Residents have warned of intensified agitation if urgent steps are not taken to improve road infrastructure in the region.
