Remembering former Prime Minister of India, Bharat Ratna Indira Gandhi: CM Naveen Patnaik, PM Modi pay tribute

Bhubaneswar, Nov 19: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today paid his humble tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her birth anniversary.

Taking twitter handled, CM tweeted, “Remembering former Prime Minister of India, Bharat Ratna #IndiraGandhi on her birth anniversary.  #NationalIntegrationDay”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her birth anniversary.

“I pay my tributes to former Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi Ji on her birth anniversary,” PM Modi tweeted.

Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi also tweeted, “Remembering Iron Lady & former Prime Minister of India Lt Smt #IndiraGandhi on her birth anniversary.  #IndiraGandhibirthanniversary.”

Indira Gandhi, the first and the only female prime minister of India, was born on this day in 1917 in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad. Political leaders from across the spectrum paid rich tributes to the ‘Iron Lady of India’ on her 104th birth anniversary.

Rahul Gandhi said, “Indira Gandhi’s name is inscribed in golden letters among the most promising prime ministers of the country. Her biggest power was to live among the people and share their joys and sorrows.

Grandma, your courage always inspires me. I still find you with me.

Heartfelt tribute.”

Born to the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Nehru, she served as the Prime Minister of the country for three terms.

During her tenure, Gandhi took decisions like the nationalization of banks and abolishing the privy purses of the princely states in the country. In one of the darkest phases of independent India, Indira had imposed a 21-month-long Emergency across the country in 1975.
