Ladakh announces historic Rs 1 crore marathon prize pool

Officials in Ladakh have declared a historic Rs 1 crore prize pool for the 13th edition of the Ladakh Marathon. This record-breaking cash reward marks the largest in the history of the event, signaling serious support from the Union Territory Administration. Situated in India's rugged northern frontier, Ladakh has increasingly positioned itself as a global hub for eco-tourism and extreme sports, moving beyond its traditional identity as a remote borderland.

Since its launch in 2012, this AIMS-certified competition has grown into the highest marathon on the planet. Scheduled to run from September 10 to 13, the 2026 edition expects to host over 10,000 visitors. Competitors will travel from 28 Indian states, six Union Territories, and all six inhabited continents. This diverse turnout highlights how deeply the endurance community values the high-altitude challenge.

Driving Local Economy and Tourism

Beyond the physical challenge, this sporting event acts as an economic engine for the entire region. Visitors spend several days adapting to the thin air while enjoying local hospitality. Organizers estimate the race will generate roughly 70,000 bed nights for accommodations. With participants spending an average of US$60 to $70 daily on food, lodging, and travel, the marathon injects between US$4.2 million and $4.9 million into the grassroots economy. This translates to about Rs 40 to 47 crore flowing directly to homestays, restaurants, taxi drivers, and local artisans.

Sanjit Rodrigues, the Administrative Secretary for Tourism and Culture, emphasized the strategic importance of the event. He explained that increasing the prize pool to Rs 1 crore shows a strong commitment to promoting sports tourism and supporting athletes. Rodrigues expressed confidence that this landmark move will secure Ladakh's reputation as a premier global destination for responsible tourism.

Conquering Extreme Altitudes

Chewang Motup Goba, the Founder and Race Director, echoed these sentiments regarding the competition's growth. He noted that the highest-ever prize pool strongly supports the original vision of the race. Goba feels deeply grateful for the trust placed in the event to elevate Ladakh's global standing in endurance sports.

Runners can choose from several categories, including the Full Marathon, Half Marathon, an 11.2 km run, and a 5 km Run for Fun. For those seeking extreme punishment, the event features the 72 km Khardung La Challenge and the 122 km Silk Route Ultra. More than 500 ultra-runners are projected to tackle the Khardung La Pass at a breathtaking altitude of 17,618 feet (5,370 metres). Organizers also maintain a strict zero-single-use-plastic policy, enlisting local schools for a PET bottle collection program to protect the delicate mountain ecosystem.
