In an insightful address at Ravenshaw University, esteemed geographer Professor K.C. Rath delivered a vital masterclass on the principles of academic research, guiding young scholars through the complexities of the process. The recently retired Utkal University professor tackled the common pitfalls faced by early-career researchers, urging them to adopt an approach rooted in sincerity, caution, and intellectual openness. His lecture served as a powerful reminder that valid research is not just a procedural task but a matter of "coherence and integrity."
The talk, titled “Empirical Social Science Research and Coordination Schema: Some Practical Guidelines,” was designed to demystify the research journey for students at all levels. Professor Rath emphasized that the foundations of good research are as relevant in everyday life as they are in higher academia. He directly addressed the tendency of young scholars to be either easily overwhelmed or prematurely satisfied with their work, often leading them to overlook crucial dimensions of their study.
Challenging students to look beyond the confines of their immediate academic environment and their supervisors, Professor Rath's core message was a call to "Open your mind, open your eyes." He stressed that every single stage of the research process, from formulating a question to a final conclusion, demands equal and rigorous attention. His lecture underscored that flexibility must be balanced with a cautious and sincere methodology to produce work that is both valid and valuable. The event, which was also aimed at exposing undergraduate students to research as part of the National Education Policy 2020, provided practical and holistic guidance, reinforcing that strong research capability is the key to flourishing in any academic field.
