Rath Yatra at arbitrary times is complete violation of sacred traditions: Puri King slams ISKCON

Bhubaneswar, Sept 7: In a strong rebuke of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), Puri King Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb stated that holding Rath Yatra celebrations at random times, rather than adhering to ancient, well-established customs, is a complete violation of sacred traditions.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, "The long-established tradition surrounding Lord Jagannatha's festivals dictates that his birthday is celebrated with Snan Yatra on Jyestha Purnima. These customs have been followed since ancient times, both in India and abroad. However, Rath Yatra at most ISKCON temples is being held at arbitrary times throughout the year, which is complete violation of these sacred traditions."

To address the issue, Gajapati Maharaja initiated a dialogue with ISKCON, which eventually led to an agreement with the governing body. They stated, "Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra will be conducted by ISKCON temples in India in accordance with the scriptures and traditional practices."

However, they clarified that the decision regarding Yatras outside India would be left to the Governing Body Commission. "We have also had discussions with them on this matter," Maharaja added.

Furthermore, Gajapati Maharaja asserted that the views put forth by ISKCON had been carefully reviewed by their scholars, but were ultimately deemed "baseless." He continued, "Rath Yatras for various deities across different states are celebrated according to their respective traditions. The same should be applied to Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra."

Gajapati Maharaja further revealed that a 100-page report had been sent to ISKCON authorities, systematically dismantling the arguments they had used to justify their actions.

"We hope they will consider the scriptures and make a swift decision. If not, we will have no choice but to resort to legal action," he said, adding firmly, "This is the final step, and we will not engage in any further dialogues with ISKCON."
