Wayanad (Kerala), November 3: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took to the campaign trail in Wayanad on Sunday, voicing support for his sister, Priyanka Gandhi, as she runs for the upcoming by-poll in his former constituency.
Addressing a rally, Rahul expressed confidence in her candidacy, stating, "I am confident that you now have the best possible MP that you could get." He emphasized their familial connection and the bond Priyanka would share with the people, saying, "She is going to be like your sister, like your mother, like your daughter."
Priyanka Gandhi, in her address, criticized the Modi-led central government, accusing it of prioritizing large corporations over ordinary citizens. She alleged that the government seeks to remain in power by "dividing people, spreading hatred, and oppressing democratic institutions."
The by-polls, set for November 13, will see Priyanka contest against BJP's Navya Haridas and Left candidate Sathyan Mokeri. Rahul Gandhi vacated the Wayanad seat earlier this year, opting to retain his Rae Bareli seat after winning both in the general elections.
Accompanied by Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal and other senior party leaders, the Gandhis received a warm welcome in Wayanad. Reflecting on her brother’s tenure, Priyanka thanked the residents for standing by him amid political challenges and campaigns against him, stating, "You recognized that this man is fighting for what is right, and you gave him the courage to continue."
The Wayanad by-poll, set in a Congress stronghold, is anticipated to be a closely watched contest amidst strong criticism of the central government from the opposition.
