New Delhi/ Bhubaneswar, December 9: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has been urged to address the growing issue of microplastic contamination on Odisha's Puri beaches.
The tribunal was informed that immediate measures, such as microplastic cleanup drives and restrictions on high-risk plastic items, are essential to mitigate the problem.
Swargadwar Beach, a key tourist destination, was identified as a "microplastic hotspot" requiring urgent attention.
During the hearing, the NGT sought a detailed response from the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) on the alarming levels of microplastics, which pose a significant threat to the environment and marine ecosystem.
The report underscores the importance of sustained efforts to protect Puri’s beaches and maintain their ecological balance.
