Punjab extends school holidays till September 7 amid flood and rain alert

Chandigarh, September 3: The Punjab government has announced an extension of holidays in all educational institutions due to the worsening flood situation and continuous heavy rainfall. Schools were earlier scheduled to reopen on September 4, 2025, but will now remain shut until Sunday, September 7.

According to the official statement, schools, colleges, universities, and polytechnic institutes across the state will resume classes from Monday, September 8, 2025, if weather conditions improve. Authorities have also indicated that the closure period could be prolonged if the flood crisis persists.

Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains informed through X (formerly Twitter) that the decision was taken under the instructions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. He further urged citizens to strictly adhere to safety advisories issued by local authorities.

Punjab continues to reel under a severe flood situation, with rivers including the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi swelling due to heavy rainfall in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Persistent downpours within Punjab have further worsened the calamity. Reports confirm that the floods have already claimed 30 lives and impacted over 3.5 lakh people across the state.
