High-Level Briefings

Today's meeting follows briefings the Prime Minister received over the weekend from the chiefs of the Indian Air Force and Navy regarding overall military preparedness. These discussions are understood to be part of the government's process of weighing retaliatory options in response to the Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives. Since the attack, India has implemented several measures concerning Pakistan, including suspending operations related to the Indus Waters Treaty and downgrading diplomatic ties.

The security situation remains tense, with Pakistani troops reportedly engaging in unprovoked firing across the Line of Control (LoC) in multiple sectors for 11th consecutive night, prompting Indian retaliation. Concurrently, security forces continue operations within Jammu and Kashmir, recently uncovering a significant militant hideout in Poonch district containing IEDs and communication equipment. On the diplomatic front, Pakistan has reportedly sought an emergency closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the situation and has briefed its domestic political parties on the escalating tensions with India.

The series of high-level security meetings in New Delhi, coupled with continued cross-border firing and ongoing counter-terrorism operations, reflects the serious situation prevailing after the Pahalgam attack. As India evaluates its response options, diplomatic activities, including Pakistan's approach to the UN Security Council, indicate the heightened state of affairs between the two nations.
