Bhubaneswar: Use of polythene of thickness of less than 50 micron will be strictly prohibited in the five cities- Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Brahmapur, Sambalpur, Rourkela and Puri- in the Odisha from today.
The State Government had declared ban on use of polythene in the above six cities on the Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, 2018. Accordingly, wholesalers and small traders had been given time to sell out/use stocked polythene by October 31 before strict enforcement of the ban from November 1.
According to sources, wholesalers, if caught selling polythene, can be penalised up to Rs 1 lakh and awarded up to five years of imprisonment. Similarly, small traders will be penalised upto Rs 7,000.
However, water pouches and big containers have been excluded from the ban, said reports.
A squad involving officials from the Environment Department and the Housing and Urban Development Department has been formed to conduct raids and take actions. District Collectors and concerned civic body Commissioners have been informed about the strict implementation of the polythene ban.
