Police-public face off over mines expansion in Angul

Angul, Aug 18: A clash broke out between police and locals over mines expansion in Angul on Wednesday. A woman has been critical in the clash that took place at Jarada village under Kaniha block in the morning. At least 60 demonstrators have been detained by police in this connection. Source said Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. is expanding its open cast project (OCP) towards Jarada village. Accordingly, MCL began excavation 60 meters away from the village. Subsequently, locals staged a demonstration and tried to stop the work. This led to a clash between police and locals. During the confrontation,a woman named Jasoda Behera was critically injured. she was rushed to Kaniha hospital for treatment. As many as four platoons of armed police have been deployed in the village anticipating law and order situation.
