Sambalpur, Nov 30: Tension ran high at the Court Square in Odisha’s Sambalpur town on Wednesday due to a clash between agitating lawyers and police. According to reports, the lawyers had been staging the protest demanding the establishment of a permanent bench of the Orissa High Court in Sambalpur. Meanwhile, police deployed on the spot uprooted the tents erected by the agitators to carry the protest for an indefinite period. This led to a clash between the lawyers and the police. On the other hand, court staff and Judges couldn’t reach the court premises due to protests by lawyers which caused a delay in the court procedures. Notably, the Supreme Court during a hearing on the Registrar General of the Orissa High Court’s plea, had directed the Bar Council of India (BCI) to suspend the licences of the agitating lawyers. The apex court had also directed arrangements by police to prevent lawyers from obstructing the working of the courts. The Sambalpur District Bar Association said that around 1600 lawyers would surrender their licence if one of them is suspended. The agitators have resorted to cease work demanding the establishment of a permanent bench of the Orissa High Court in Sambalpur.
