Bhubaneswar: A day after the Supreme Court (SC) asked the Centre whether it has conducted any backwater study on discharging 50 lakh cusecs of water into the Polavaram Dam project and asked for a report on it, the latter today submitted that since the backwater study was conducted in 2011 there is no need for a fresh one now. The Centre submitted that there is no need for another backwater study as a similar type of study was carried out in 2011. The apex court fixed November 15 for final hearing on the matter. Notably, a three-judge bench of the SC comprising Justice Madan B Lokur, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Abdul S Nazeer directed the Union Government to apprise the court of its views on the backwater subject by Friday. “Have you conducted the backwater study? If not, how much time will be required to conduct the study,” the court wanted to know from the Centre. The Odisha government had been batting for a study on the backwater effect of the mega project.
